The Difference Between a Peel and a Scrub: The Essence of the Procedure

The skin requires regular deep cleansing. For this purpose, there are spa procedures that have similar goals but differ in their techniques and methods of application.

Peeling

Peeling not only cleanses the skin but also rejuvenates and renews it. By removing the upper layer of dead skin cells, the regeneration processes are activated. Skin irregularities are smoothed out, and fine wrinkles are reduced. This is why the method is often used for mature and aging skin types.

The appearance of certain skin concerns is an indication for a cosmetologist to recommend a specific type of procedure. High-quality results can only be achieved when the treatment is performed by a professional specialist.

As for the materials used, peeling products usually have a more fluid texture, often with gel-like consistency. Peeling procedures are divided into mechanical, enzymatic, laser, and chemical types. Despite the depth of their effect, this method is considered less aggressive due to its “passive” nature. The active ingredients work without requiring significant physical effort.

Scrubbing

Massage salons offer this treatment before the main spa program to gently exfoliate dead cells from the upper skin layer, which promotes deeper cleansing. At the same time, blood circulation improves and metabolic processes become more active.

Scrubs can have different effects depending on their composition — antimicrobial, antibacterial, exfoliating, and anti-inflammatory — which makes them widely used in cosmetology.

Their action is mechanical. The product is applied with the fingertips, and its effectiveness also depends on the skills of the specialist. The presence of different abrasive particles determines whether the product is more intensive or gentle.

The particles are usually larger, and the consistency of the products is thicker. The substance needs to be “rubbed” into the skin while carefully controlling pressure to avoid possible skin damage.

Traditional Thai massage includes cleansing procedures. However, certain precautions must be followed. Contraindications include pain, increased skin sensitivity, and inflammatory processes on the skin surface.
